The Songs Live On…

maxfield parrish 1

I have long been enchanted by the paintings of Maxfield Parrish with their fantasy quality, the iridescent shades of blue and gold he achieved on the canvas giving his work an otherworldly quality. He reigned as a master of the arts throughout the Art Nouveau period, living into his 90’s and strangely regretting not to have pursued a more musical career in place of his beloved art.

Thought to be Lydia Parrish

But this post is not about Mr. Parrish.  I’m always looking through any material or book I can find about Coastal Georgia.  Mr. T has a lovely older book entitled, “Recollections of Glynn”, filled with amazing photographs, sketches and drawings that fill in many historical gaps for me.  On one of the pages I noticed a small picture at the bottom.  In it a lovely older woman, taken in profile, is pictured.  The caption reads, “While Maxfield Parrish achieved fame as an illustrator, his wife, Lydia, lived quietly on St. Simons Island and gathered almost forgotten fold songs.  Her book, Slave Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands was published in 1942 and is regarded as a significant contribution to the genre.”.

maxfield parrish 3

While Maxfield Parrish made his home in his beloved New England, his wife spent part of her life in Coastal Georgia.  This is a bit of history you may be aware of, but I am just discovering the information.   Lydia made it her life’s work when in the area to meet local people and ask to hear the songs the slaves sang as they toiled on the land, working themselves into an early grave, for the most part.  These songs are a bit haunting, but uplifting at the same time.

georgia sea island singers

Our famed  Georgia Sea Island Singers continue performing these songs of old, passing them down as a part of history, never to be forgotten.  The oppression of any people is never a good thing.  But history shows, throughout time, that music has been a form of medicine that soothes the soul of those who gave so much.  Many of the songs tell a story, they piece together a history we might not see in any other way.

Here is a recording, if you’d like to give a listen, it’s a 1959 recording of Bessie Jones singing “Sink em Low”.  You’ll hear the pathos and the soul in this music that was originally sung by chain gangs as they worked in the hot sun.

As you begin this new week look around and see the history that surrounds you.  Listen to the music and imagine the spirit that brought these tunes and lyrics into being.  We live in an area so full of interesting history…what will you discover this week?  I’d love to hear from you!

Wiggy Wanda

Wiggy-Wanda-new-cover-300px

I wrote about Kathy Williams Mashburn, Georgia author, last year when her precious book “A Birthday Clown for Archer” was first published.  Many people have a strange fear of clowns and this book addressed that issue and the fact that clowns are just ordinary people with a costume on.  Kathy has done it again with the launch of her new children’s book, “Wiggy Wanda”.

wiggy wanda 1

This book deals with the subject of cancer, the treatment, side affects and other aspects of a disease that touches so many lives in today’s world.  When Kathy’s aunt was diagnosed with cancer years ago Kathy’s then eight year old daughter, Rana, asked if she could have the aunt’s wig if she died.  The aunt insisted on giving Rana the wig right then and there, telling her to enjoy it now….not after someone dear has died.  Such words of wisdom and such a lesson for us all in enjoying life now.

WW-sample-page-3

Not only has Kathy written this wonderful book, she has created a “Wiggy Wanda” doll, complete with its own wig.  I think this is such a great way to open the door for conversation among family members of all ages when dealing with this devastating disease.  It gives parents a way to talk with children about the different stages of treatment and what can be expected.  “Wiggy Wanda” is a compassionate story to be shared by young and old.  Read more about the book here:  www.wiggywanda.com, and watch the trailer by clicking below!

Kathy has generously offered a giveaway of a copy of “Wiggy Wanda” to one special reader!  Leave a comment, comment on The Permanent Tourist facebook and we’ll announce a winner on Wednesday!  I can’t wait to see what Kathy will be up to next!  Her children’s books entertain and inspire….I know what ever is coming next will not let readers down!

For several months now I have been taping a special monthly segment for my radio show with Chef Tom Delaney and wine expert, Mark Gagliano.  We go back and forth talking about wine pairings, seasonal foods, culinary creations and anything that comes to mind.  We always have a great time together with a stimulating discussion that listeners look forward to each month.

During the course of doing these recordings I have gotten to know both Mark and Tom on a personal basis.  I have written about Mark and featured wine pairing tips from him several times over the past year.  He is always full of information, wisdom and humor that I love sharing with readers.  This is the first time I have featured a post on Tom Delaney and the wonderful bistro here on St. Simons that bears his name.

delaney's 4

Delaney’s Bistro and Bar is a favorite here on the island.  Most recently it received Elegant Island Living’s Best of 2014 award for both “Most Elegant” as well as “Best Place For Dinner”.  Delaney’s is always a place where we choose to celebrate special occasions, an evening of casual tapas and wine or a delicious lunch any day, except Sunday and Monday when the restaurant takes a much needed break.

Delaney's 2

Served with classic European style, Delaney’s offers one of the best wine selections available and a knowledgeable staff making this a wonderful dining experience.

I always enjoy the crab cakes at lunch.  Delicious lump crab meat is mixed with just the right herbs and spices, then lightly sautéed to golden perfection.  No matter what the occasion, this dish makes me feel like celebrating just about anything!

Tom is a bit of a shy guy, but as we have gotten to know each other I have come to appreciate his vast knowledge of the culinary world.  His ability to create a masterpiece that combines fresh local produce, seafood, fish or the highest quality meats to be found keeps him at the top of the list when it comes to fine dining in Coastal Georgia.  I’ve also learned that behind that shyness lies a heart of gold with a wicked sense of humor that shows itself at the least expected times.  Tom is delightful and I’m pleased to write about him and his wonderful restaurant today!

If you’ve never experienced Delaney’s you must put it at the top of your list.  Reservations are a must as this popular place fills up with loyal customers quickly!

Sea Georgia Adventures

008

My love affair with Coastal Georgia continues!  What a joy to spend time with Captain Duane Harris and discuss the fishing charters and eco-tours he offers through “Sea Georgia Adventures”.  He moved to the area right after finishing college in Colorado.   Captain Duane worked as head of the Coastal Georgia region Department of Natural Resources for thirty-three years, he also did consulting for the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council for nine years after retirement.  Now, he follows his bliss and leads others through the world he loves, the sea,  rivers and marshes with all of the wildlife and vegetation native to the area.

019

The knowledge Captain Duane possesses of Coastal Georgia is vast and he loves sharing it.  History, information about the eco-system, his involvement with establishing the artificial deep sea coral area off the coast all play into what you can learn on an eco-tour.  Tours can be customized to fit the interests of the customer.  Six people can participate in one of these two-three hour tours which begin at Village Creek Landing and venture out past Hampton toward open sea, around Little St. Simons Island and back to the landing.

002

If you are interested in birding you will be in for a treat!  Captain Duane’s knowledge of the many species that inhabit this area will delight any birding enthusiast.  He guides tours through local marshes and rivers, discovering all of the various birds to be found making their homes in the most unusual places.  You may even see a curious dolphin or two.  And, something I did not know, there are manatees to be found here at certain times of the year.

Fishing charters begin in early morning and return by mid-day.  Sea Bass, Flounder, River Trout, Black Drum and at times Tripletail are just a few of the fish to be caught on one of these excursions.  Captain Duane knows just where to go to provide fisherman with the best catch.  But, he admits there are days when the fish just aren’t biting.

Being involved in a business that allows him to share his wealth of knowledge and love of Coastal Georgia is a dream come true for Captain Duane.  This will be a trip you will never forget whether you are a resident of the area or a visitor.  I can’t wait to experience my first eco-tour!  Call the Captain and arrange for your tour or fishing charter.

The Lady Cooks!

salvation cinnamon rolls lg

The minute I laid eyes on Libbie Summers, chef, author and food stylist, among many other talents, I knew she cut her path in her own way.  At last fall’s Food and Spirits Festival Libby presented her fabulous Salvation Cinnamon Rolls, promising the recipe in an upcoming cookbook.  And deliver she did in her newest cookbook, “Sweet and Vicious”.  Ms. Summers is passionate about all that she does which translates into pure deliciousness for her many fans!  Her sense of style both in food as well as fashion will spark your quest for a bit of fantasy and creativity like nothing else!

“The Whole Hog Cookbook”, sold me on both the recipes created by Libbie and the photography of her associate Chia Chong that make dishes pop off the printed page, longing to be put together by the reader.

Just the photo on the cover of “Sweet and Vicious” makes one have to pick up a copy and peruse the pages.  Ms. Summers stands near a gorgeous layer cake with a chef’s knife in hand, slathered with hot pink icing fresh from cutting a slice.  Her wicked sense of humor shines through even before opening the cover.

Ms. Summer’s story of Southern Sartorialist’s Cookies whetted my appetite to try this salty, smoky bourbon-laced oatmeal cookie to offer to the special men in my life.

Both of these books deliver pure culinary creations that will tempt and inspire even the beginning cook.  I love the doors Libbie Summers continuously opens to challenge our cooking skills and laugh all the way through even a complicated production.  These recipes are sure to please and, most likely, become family favorites to share the goodness so generously shared on every page! Hazel’s Cafe

hazels-1

I’m featuring a few of my favorite posts while I’m recovering from surgery.  This post on Hazel’s Cafe was on of my most highly read posts.  I think it’s timeless and hope that you’ll enjoy reading it once again.  The address is 1166 Demere Road, the place is Hazel’s Cafe.  Once situated in the thriving African American “South End” section of St. Simons Island.  Hazel’s Cafe now sits as a reminder of what once was.  The facade is faded, the windows a bit cloudy with age, but oh, if these walls could only talk…..there would be stories to tell!

008

Hazel Floyd and her husband, Thomas, opened the cafe in the late 1940’s.  Thomas served in World War II and settled on the island with his wife after returning from battle.

035

The rest is history.  I spent an hour with owner, Fred Marris who bought the property, including Hazel’s home next door to the cafe, in 1994.  His plans for the property did not come to fruition, but he is dedicated to keeping both buildings preserved.

005

Inside Hazel’s Cafe it feels as though you are entering into another time.  The original cash register sits on a stand by the front door, it’s drawer open as though waiting for the cashier to complete a transaction and close it.

037

The original bar still stands with a vintage “Budweiser” sign thay lights up when plugged in.

Photographs portraying the history of St. Simons Island, Sea Island and Brunswick are carefully hung on the walls and the old piano, once played for patrons enjoyment remains toward the back of the cafe.

006

Hazel and Thomas Floyd ran the cafe until 1978.  The final health department inspection still hangs on the kitchen wall.

033

Fred shared stories about the cafe with me including the fact that Hazel would go crabbing all day when the season was in full swing.  She would then come back to the cafe, pick through her catch and create fresh deviled crab for the special that night.  She caught a 100+ at a time, my mouth watered at the thought of how delicious they must have been.  The remains of the outdoor smoker sits shrouded in weeds, a reminder of barbecue and other meats served at the cafe.

036

The memories linger, the history lives on.  Long time residents remember when South End was a bustling place with Wilma’s Dinner Theater located just across the street from Hazel’s Cafe and the neighborhood was a place to gather, share great food and entertainment.

There is a wonderful publication here on St. Simons Island, a magazine that expresses the good life and all that goes into that.  “Elegant Island Living”,  created by the talented David Butler, appears on newsstands each month.  In its pages are lovely photographs of local people, stories about their lives and passions and plenty of information to help anyone  find the best of everything in the area.

E

Each year “Elegant Island Living” holds its “Best Of” celebration.  Readers are given a ballot with a multitude of categories for which they write their favorite.  Be it a restaurant, boutique or service business, each category counts and reflects what readers consider to be the best in the area.  Little did I know that this year there was a category for Best Local Website…….

THE PERMANENT TOURIST WON!!!!!!

EIL-best-of-2014

When the announcement was made this past week and I received notification from Kathi Williams, EIL’s Social Media Director,  I almost fell off my chair.  How exciting to be working away, sharing my life here on St. Simons Island with readers all over the world and then receive such an award!

eil 4

As a writer one tends to live a rather solitary life.  One of the reasons I began writing The Permanent Tourist blog was to get me out of the house, meeting people and learning about this wonderful place where I live.  Being able to share this with readers is an experience I cannot describe.  It all began slowly and has built over the past eighteen months to become a recognized form of media that local readers look forward to each day.

eil 2

I’m writing this post today to say a huge THANK YOU to all the readers who penciled in the name of my website in the space provided and to “Elegant Island Living” for sponsoring this annual event.  I would also like to thank the entire staff at the magazine for all that they do each and every month to give us such beautiful things to enjoy as we turn each page.  We do live the good life here on St. Simons Island, a life that I’ll continue sharing with readers near and far…..besides, now that I know there is a category in this annual contest for my site I have to strive to make it two years in a row!  Here’s to winning!

Friendly Flowers

seedling

If you are a regular reader of my blog you know how much I love getting outdoors, in my garden….up to my elbows in moist soil.  I love the smell of the soil, I love the feeling of accomplishment….I even like getting all dirty and sweaty, like a little kid playing.  Gardening is a way of creating like none other.  Watching seeds sprout and produce beautiful blooms cannot be equaled.

I haven’t been able to get out in my garden for three months now.  Mr. T has done his best to keep things going, but it’s not the same as being able to do it myself.  One thing I’m learning during this time of recovery is what a control freak I am!  In some ways that’s good and some ways……not so!  Learning to let go and let others care for me and help with the simple things is more challenging than I expected.

flowers from Holly

When the doorbell rang yesterday, Skylar answered and came into our living room with the loveliest flower arrangement.  My friend and associate, Holly Herrick, sent flowers to cheer me up and brighten my day.  The freshly cut bouquet is so lovely, filled with all of my favorite colors, cheerful and offering love and hope.

A Courtyard Florist, here on St. Simons, put these exquisite flowers together and delivered them to our home.  I’m loving and enjoying seeing them.  Flowers truly do bring a bit of happiness into your life when things are not quite the status quo.

Thank you, dear Holly, for this gift…..everytime I look at them I think of you and say thank you for a very special friend.

Riding In Style

019

Remember the old movies, the ceremonies for awards that followed and the elegant movie stars arriving in a fabulous Cadillac or Rolls Royce limousine?

Beautiful automobiles from a bygone past….hold on a minute!  D.A. Martin of Martin’s Wedding Transportation has a few of these on hand, with chaffeurs to complete this elegant experience.

007

A 1940 Cadillac limousine began this journey for D.A. when he picked it up at an estate sale outside Birmingham, Alabama.  Driving back from taking his horses and all of their gear to a new home in Tennessee, D.A. saw the ad for the sale and the rest is history.  He got the necessary funding from a local bank and embarked on a new venture, offering chauffeur driven vintage limousines for wedding parties, customized tours of Coastal Georgia and for individuals who just want to ride in style.  What a way to go to the theatre, prom or any event that calls for something special.  Since beginning with the Cadillac, D.A. has added a beautiful 1970 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow to his stable of limos.

Or, perhaps this Excalibur that seats up to ten passengers might be more to your liking.

the great gatsby movie set 11

The ride is smooth and luxurious in all of the vintage limousines offered for your riding pleasure.  It might be of interest to note that the 1940 Cadillac was one of only 18 made that year.  Only three remain.  Are you thinking Great Gatsby yet?

You can read more about Martin’s at the company website:  www.martinsweddingtransportation.com.

I have always been impressed with people who reinvent and redefine themselves throughout their life’s journey.  From school principal in Ohio, living on a farm then moving to coastal Georgia and beginning this adventure, D.A. has taken life by the reins, no pun intended, and moved forward in a very positive way.  Here’s to you D.A.!

The Importance of Attitude

Emory University School of Medicine

Emory University School of Medicine

As you read this post I am in Atlanta going through all of the Pre-Op issues before surgery on the 25th.  Over the next few weeks I’ll be writing a few posts, not too many, about the process I’m going through.  I have long been a believer in positive thinking.  Thoughts have been proven to be things, time and time again.  There is actual proof that we are affected by what we think.  When facing difficult times it is always challenging to pull ourselves up, shake off the dust and keep moving forward.  It is imperative to healing and good health that we be able to do this.

marcus aurelius quote lg

Much has been written about the power of positive thought.  In fact, as far back as Marcus Aurelius, you’ll find quotes that speak to this issue.  Quotes such as “You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”……and “The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.” .  Even in his day, centuries ago, the realization that we are what we think was there for enlightened minds to grasp and put into use.

pink-roses-wallpaper

Stop and smell the roses!

I’m working to keep my mind on a positive thread, to stop the negative thoughts the minute they stir, which they do….believe me, and quell the little fears that pop up in the middle of the night.  We absolutely have control over what thoughts we accept and those we do not.  If you don’t believe me, try it.  When a negative thought arises in your mind, simply stop, take a deep breath and tell it to leave, tell it you don’t need it, in a gentle inner voice.  If you practice, faithfully, you’ll begin to feel the difference.

glorious day lg

Life is a process of learning and developing.  The difficult times make us stronger, hopefully, making the easy times cause for celebration.  As I face surgery next week I’m mindful of celebrating life, my life and all of the goodness, the challenges and, yes, the sorrows, that have made me who I am today.  I am forever thankful for everything and I look forward to being able to move freely, experiencing the wonder of mere existence.  Each of us is a miracle…..think about it.  Embrace your life and REALLY live it.  Find what you are passionate about and pursue it with fervor.  I’m with you on this, we can take the steps together and share the amazing results!

Here’s a little video that may help you on your way!
