A Majestic Presence

Ralph Hurst

On the cover of a brochure that features the chronology of work by artist, Ralph N. Hurst, he is referred to as an “American Sculptor Luminary”.  If you look the term “Luminary” up on-line, here is the definition you will find:  A person who inspires or influences others, especially one prominent in a particular sphere.  Synonyms used for luminary include guiding light, inspiration, hero, master and expert, among others.

When I visited with Ralph’s widow, Jean Hurst, yesterday and actually saw and touched the work of this great man the word luminary made perfect sense to me.  Ralph Hurst began his lifetime journey on September 4, 1918.  In a way you might say kismet touched him, leading him at every turn to meet his destiny.  A high school football injury turned Ralph’s focus away from sports and onto art.  He attended a commercial art school in his home state of Indiana and continued on to Indiana University where Robert Laurant, the great French born American sculptor became his mentor.  After earning both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in art at IU, Ralph found his path leading him to Florida where, in 1953, he began his teaching career at Florida State University.   He spent 27 years as a member of the faculty and received the honor of “Professor Emeritus”.

Ralph loved to play, he was blessed to have a wonderful sense of humor as well as a streak of adventure.  His sculpture glows with the energy he infused into his work making the observer have to reach out and touch each piece, running a hand over the smooth, cool lines of his work, The Mermaid, or a pair of swans, sensually entertwined.  You’ll find his sculptures in alabaster, marble, bronze, wood and synthetics, all masterfully used to create his lifelike sculptures.

Jean has turned her home on St. Simons Island into a sort of gallery to showcase her late husband’s work.  Each piece is presented with perfect lighting and placement.  Ralph’s bas relief pieces grace the walls of this lovely home, works of paper and other substances that he hand molded to create these fabulous works of art.

Ralph Hurst Gallery

Shortly before his death in 2003, the Hurst’s donated a major part of Ralph’s work to the Tallahassee Community College in Florida.  This donation led to the Ralph Hurst Gallery which now stands next to the performing arts theatre, co-designed by Jean, who spent years at the college as founding theatre director and English professor.  The gallery enables others to view these extraordinary works of art and, hopefully, provide inspiration to those inclined to express themselves creatively.

The website Jean Hurst recently launched has Ralph’s work lovingly featured here:  http://www.jhurstartgallery.com/home.html.  You can also schedule an appointment to view these works of art by contacting Jean at 912-268-4028.  The work of Ralph Hurst has to be seen and touched to be truly appreciated.  And in that touch, you’ll capture the essence of the man who created them with such love and attention to detail.  Ralph truly lives on through his work and the great love he shared with Jean can be sensed in the peaceful environment that houses his masterpieces.

A Passion For Sea Glass….

Judith 1

I first became acquainted with the work of jewelry designer, Judith Paixao, when a mutual friend posted a photograph of her work on Facebook.  I am a great lover of sea glass, now more than ever!  Judith Paixao creates one of a kind works of art out of sea glass and all sorts of found and recycled objects that work their way into her process.  No two pieces are ever alike and Judith encourages clients to guide her in the colors and elements they would like to see included in their wearable art.

Each piece is surely a work of art, something to be cherished for years to come.  This necklace, which first drew my attention, is “Bermuda Blue”.  Blue sea glass, seed pearls and silver bits make up this fabulous piece.

Her sense of color and balance shine through in every piece she designs.  The word meticulous comes to mind when I look a the intricacy of her work.  The various shades of sea glass, some I have never seen, are collected as Judith and her husband, Kev, travel the world.  Bermuda has been home to them for quite some time, but in April….they will begin calling St. Simons Island home!

BDA-studio sea glass sign

Judith studied jewelry design in Brazil and has worked there as well as Bermuda, Charleston and other locations in the States.  She and her husband live on a sail boat as I write this, working out of their studio on board.  Kev photographs Judith’s work as well as helping with the collecting of sea glass.

If you’re interested in sea glass, here’s a short film Judith sent that I think you’ll enjoy.  Also take note of the special classes she conducts where participants are actually making pieces, with Judith’s guidance, of course.  This is right up my alley!

Her Facebook page will introduce you to more of her work:  https://www.facebook.com/BermudaSeaGlassJewelry.  Judith also has a shop on Etsy:  https://www.etsy.com/search?q=judith%20paixao&view_type=gallery&ship_to=US

April is right around the corner!  I cannot wait to meet Judith and Kev in person and to see the charming studio sign attached to their new home here on St. Simons!  I think a big island “WELCOME” is in order!

The Hamer House

I posted about Safe Harbor and their annual “Rites of Spring” event last year.  At the time the main house was the only facility I saw where children are sheltered and cared for having been in an abusive or threatening situation.

025

Now it is my pleasure to show you the Hamer House.   Named after the family that founded Safe Harbor in Brunswick, this sweet home has been fully renovated by a special group of volunteers.  The interior is so well designed, I felt like I was in a model home!

014 013

The kitchen….oh that kitchen!  I can just see the children gathered around the huge island, helping prepare their evening meal and discussing the day.

016 015

The library/study area is the perfect place to do homework and get special help from tutors who so selflessly volunteer their time.

All of the attention to detail in creating the nautical theme shows.  And you may be interested to know that the furnishing, clothing and food for this home have all been donated.  The giving nature of people throughout Coastal Georgia never ceases to amaze me.  Whether I’m talking with the Humane Society about animal adoption or places that shelter and help children and the homeless, the hearts of our community open and give in very special ways.

storage shed

Something that is needed at Safe Harbor right now is a large storage shed!  I’m saying a special prayer for this one!

017

Safe Harbor is a beacon of light in our community.  Innocent children are protected, nurtured and loved in a warm atmosphere that offers them a home.  Won’t you think of Safe Harbor when you begin spring cleaning this year and save clothes, toys, books and other household items that can be used there?  Visit the website to learn more here:  www.safeharborshelter.org

Tastes of Heaven

When you talk about Indigo Coastal Shanty you’re talking delicious!  The smells, the ethnic feeling, the staff….it all adds up to a very special culinary treat!  And it’s right here in Coastal Georgia in Brunswick!

Chef Kate Buchanan is the culinary conductor behind all of the creative dishes that appear on the menu and special board each day. Layering flavors and textures, her style of cooking is straight from the soul.  Visit the website here:  www.indigocoastalshanty.com

The atmosphere is island like, especially on the deck outdoors when weather permits.  The staff is friendly, they know how to romance the food while answering any questions you may have about the menu and they are attentive without hovering.

001

Our lunch selections did not disappoint us either!  The Baja Chicken Tostado, a tasty blend of chicken, shredded and paired with avocado, thinly sliced cabbage, salsa and queso fresco cheese….YUM!

002

And the Roasted Chili Rellenos…….no words can express the intense blending of flavors with shredded pork, dried apricots and other yummy ingredients that created this masterpiece.

I love this restaurant.  Chef Kate is inventive featuring the unexpected combinations that never fail to please.  Fresh local produce,  seafood and fish can always be found on the menu.  I get hungry just reading about the daily specials on Facebook!  This is foodie heaven, a place I’ll visit as often as I can!

004

Oh….I almost forgot dessert!  This warm spice cake, full of ginger and other aromatic flavors, topped with vanilla ice cream sliced almonds and a swirl of melted caramel…..three spoons please!  We all had a couple of bites and left feeling very, very happy with our lunch!

For The Beauty of Our Coast

016

Elizabeth Halderson is a woman of such talent.  She designs her pottery pieces to reflect the nature that surrounds us in Coastal Georgia.  Her whimsical serving pieces that replicate diamond back terrapin, fish of all sorts, pink spoonbills and all types of local flora and fauna can be found intricately embedded or painted onto her designs.

PicMonkey eliz. pottery Collage

I love the color she gets, bright and lively…..clear and precise.

PicMonkey pottery Collage

Elizabeth grew up on St. Catherine’s Island so her life has been one of immersion in the magic of the area.  Her process is one of “soft slab” pottery that she works until it meets just the right thickness to be shaped into one of her signature forms.  Her pieces that feature local vegetation are actually traced from a leaf or part of the plant she is replicating.

012

She fires the pieces in a kiln she keeps in her studio, carefully timing the process to insure that the colors come out just as she wants them to be.

009

This is truly an art form that is usable.  Her dishware can go through the dishwasher and come out ready for another use.  She does warn that some of the larger bowls and platters would be better off hand washed.

013

Her work can be found on St. Simons Island at Accents Marketplace and Nature Gifts in the village.  You can also find her on-line at www.elizabethpottery.com or in her Etsy shop at www.elizabethpottery.etsy.com.  I love her whimsical jewelry designs.  Both pendants and earrings are available in various colors and designs.

005

These are pieces to collect and treasure whether you live in the area or want something to always remind you of a special trip to the islands.  I’m looking at the large terrapin platter and imagining it in the center of our outdoor dining table, piled with freshly steamed crab and shrimp…..perfect!

The Amazing Mr. Harvey

Connecting with people is a major part of why I love writing this blog.   Last year I received a phone call from a lovely woman I know only on-line, BriAnne Dixon.  She was visiting friends on St. Simons Island and wanted to learn more about my blog.  She also began to tell me about interesting people she thought I might enjoy writing about and getting to know.  One of these people turned out to be Harold Michael Harvey.  Since that phone conversation, Harold and I have connected via phone and e-mail conversations and formed a friendship that will one day lead to our actually meeting in person!

harold michael harvey

I am so impressed with Harold Michael Harvey.  He is a generous, giving soul.  A man well educated in the ways of law and government.  Harold graduated from Tuskegee University with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science and continued on to get his law degree from Atlanta Law School.  But Harold has taken his career beyond the legal arena and is a well known journalist as well, winning the “Outstanding work in Newspaper Journalism”.  He continues as a contributing writer of articles to various on-line publications such as Allvoices Inc.

His critically acclaimed novel, “Paper Puzzle”,  is based on his life as a young black boy who questioned his grandmother as to why he could not play behind the sales counter with a white boy whose family owned the store in the mid 1950’s.  The story goes on to become a riveting mystery with two protagonist’s, one black and one white.  Find out more about “Paper Puzzle” here:  http://paperpuzzle.net/.

His work as a humanitarian stands out. Harold is an accomplished public speaker as he strives to communicate with people of all races and backgrounds, bringing them together with his words of inspiration.   He works to develop and grow race relations through his work with youth and the game of baseball.  He  serves on the Black College Legends and Pioneers Committee for The College Baseball Foundation Board of Trustees and the National College Baseball Hall of Fame. This gives him a vote in deciding who gets into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.  He has been instrumental in the lives of many young people, always promoting understanding between people of different color and ethnic backgrounds.  To date, his accomplishments in working with young people have led to three becoming attorney’s, three journalist’s and most recently the election of Courtney English to serve as chair to the Atlanta Public Schools.  Harold is an accomplished public speaker as he strives to communicate with people of all races and backgrounds, bringing them together with his words of inspiration.

PicMonkey HMH2 Collage

The side of Harold I find most interesting is his love of art, music, cooking, gardening and photography.   Living a well balanced life that embraces his work as well as his hobbies and the arts keeps him grounded.  He makes his home in Atlanta, but makes frequent trips to Coastal Georgia.   Most recently, Harold received the keys to the city of Brunswick, GA in recognition of his work with Africa American Youths throughout the state.  I am honored to call Harold my friend, and one of these days I’ll have the opportunity to make that dinner for him we keep talking about!  The door is always open, Harold…..come on down!

So Delicious!

I love featuring special people in posts.  I’m sitting here, as I write, enjoying a piece of whole grain toast slathered with homemade Ginger Pear Jam.  This isn’t just any jam, it’s made by a local guy named Tony Montenegro.

012

I learned about Tony and his jams through a post on Facebook and connected with him at the local farmer’s market held in Brunswick each Saturday morning at Mary Ross Park.

008

Tony weathered the bitter, cold wind to be there this past Saturday and I was determined to meet him.  You see, Tony is on a mission.  He is in need of a kidney transplant which will take place at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville when the time comes.  He may have up to a two year wait.   Since the hospital is more than 70 miles away, Tony will have to stay close by after the transplant to make sure all is well.  Since this issue presented a major financial challenge he put his mind to work and came up with a plan.

tee tyme jellies 1

Tony loves to make jams and jellies.  Last summer he began making and marketing his delicious line of Tee Tyme Jellies & Jams as a fundraiser.  To his surprise, he could barely keep the jars of the delicious combinations in stock.  He has even shipped to customers out of the country!

tee tyme jellies 3

Flavors include:  Strawberry Mango, Lemongrass, Ginger Pear, Blueberry, Fig and several others.  I can attest to the fact that the Ginger Pear is full of fresh ginger root with delicious bits of pear in every bite.  Instant love for the ginger lover in me!

tee tyme jellies 4

He keeps his ingredients local and seasonal so you may not be able to get blackberry anytime you want, but when they are in season you’ll find this yummy concoction on his list.  Tony will mail order if you contact him at tcmonty562yahoo.com or call him at 912-269-8463.  Each hand filled, half pint jar is $5.00, well worth it too!  Don’t forget to try Tony’s local honey as well!  Here’s to good health for you Tony!

The Great Dr. King

We celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King today.

Introducing Tamra!

When I first began blogging last year I felt hesitant, a bit frightened, challenged yet determined.  I love writing, connecting and sharing thoughts and ideas with others.  An idea buzzed in the back of my mind about other people who might live in places they would like to share with others just as I am doing.  What began as a dream became a reality when I met Tamra Bolton on a media trip hosted by Leigh Cort at Andy and Shannon Hill’s wonderful Eagle Island retreat.

Tamra with tomatoes

This is one lively lady, funny, independent and definitely original.  Being a native Texan myself, we instantly “clicked” and found many things to discuss.  Tamra is an early riser and made sure coffee was brewing for the rest of the group each day when we were together.  As we discussed our various backgrounds and venues for our writing,  she expressed interest in my blog, loving the name (Note: a friend referred to her as being a “Permanent Tourist” when she left to join this media group).  One thing led to another and we decided to begin the journey of launching another “The Permanent Tourist” from Tamra’s location in East Texas.

tamra 1

Tamra has since become my friend.  She is an excellent writer and photographer.  Her work can be found in several Texas publications like ‘Discover East Texas’, ‘IN’ magazines, Tyler Morning Telegraph and Jacksonville Daily Progress newspapers.  She also has an article on her recent trip to Italy in “Travel Post Monthly” on-line.  Tamra is a professional in every way and I know my readers will enjoy her posts as well!

tamra-with-olive

In her own words Tamra is  crazy about maps, horses, cats, being outdoors, dogs, chocolate, coffee, wine, reading, writing, (of course!) and watching old 60’s TV shows!

Tamra with fireplace and wine

Not only is she talented at her work, she is an inspiration with her positive outlook on life.  Our phone conversations always leave me feeling uplifted and recharged.  When you visit Tamra on her blog site you’ll learn about all of her travels, experiences, recipes and her outlook on life in general.

I am very proud to announce that The Permanent Tourist….Living and Loving The Lone Star State is ready for your comments and reading enjoyment at:  www.tpt-jxtx.com.  We’re growing and reaching out to other talented writer/photographers who are passionate about where they live and want to share their life experiences.  Leave me a comment or send me a message at melissa@thepermanenttourist.com if you would like further information!
