One Author’s Path

The Vessel Of  Scion, a riveting thriller, is now available for your reading pleasure.  I met with local author, Holly McClure, who developed the story for this fascinating book after speaking with a Cajun gentleman whose family fled to Nova Scotia when the Cathar’s were persecuted in France centuries ago.  They eventually found their way to the state of Louisiana, making their home in the famous bayou state that now offers such a French flavor in both lifestyle and food.  Holly tells a story of suspense and  intrigue as to what actually happened with the Cathar line and any of its survivors.  If you like the writing of Dan Brown, get ready, this book takes the theories of conspiracy to an all new level.  The story begins in the Louisiana bayous where the whirlwind of mystery and suspense is activated as a young woman is taken from her home to Rome.  On to France, back to other parts of Italy and to a chamber of Cairn on a mythical island on the North Sea.  Who is this beautiful woman?  Why is she of such interest to a certain religious group, so much so that she is being tracked down with the intent of ending her life?  A colorful cast of characters blend to create a story you will not be able to put down!

montsegur lg.

Montsegur

Holly put years of research into the writing of The Vessel of  Scion.  As her friend I was pleased to be a part of the end of this process, reading each update and rewrite until it was just right for submission to publishing houses.  When the book finally found its home with a company in the UK celebration was in order.  One thinks that books just happen, the truth is far different!   The actual process of a well written book is one of months and most likely years invested in the final product.  A trip to France to visit the area around Montsegur and other parts of Southern France known to have been inhabited by this Christian group who believed in the battle between darkness and light contributed to Holly’s well written story.  The Cathar’s posed a threat to the powerful Roman Catholic church who saw to their final demise over seven hundred years ago.  No one really knows for sure how many survived this brutal slaughter to continue the stories and the history of this brave group of Christ followers.  But the story Holly weaves gives the reader much to consider and to think about upon finishing the final pages.

Rural North Carolina

This is not the only book Holly has penned.  Her ability to use her talent in various genre’s never ceases to amaze me.  Upcoming will be a trilogy in the Young Adult category, The Hanover Hall Mysteries,  that is full of mystery, the supernatural and ultimate fun as a pair of imaginative twins put their heads together with their grandmother, ala Shirley McClaine, finding one adventure after another!  Holly’s book Conjurer has just been accepted at Mercer Press for publication.  Her life as the daughter of a full blooded Cherokee mother and a Scottish father probably added to her ability to spin a compelling tale.  Raised in Robbinsville, North Carolina, Holly was encouraged to share her dreams, visions and stories with the elders who included her grandfather, also a great storyteller.  The tribe nurtured their children by letting them expand their imaginations rather than curb them.  Conjurer is a powerful work Holly created that takes place in her beloved home state, another page turner that will capture your interest as the story develops and characters explode off the pages.

Holly McClure

Holly’s life has led her in many directions.  Work as a nurse, a mother of three and a life that included helping others with addiction led to her current life as a writer.  She lives on St. Simons Island with her lovely husband, Jack Gonzalez, who is a rare book dealer.    Holly owned the Sullivan Maxx Literary Agency until Lexium Entertainment in Atlanta acquired the business from her in January 2013.  Lexium is a large agency with offices in both Atlanta and Chicago.  Sullivan Maxx is now under their large umbrella as the literary/film division with Holly still keeping her “finger in the pot”, guiding the direction and growth of her brain child.  She offers invaluable help to fellow writers who have a work that is almost, but not quite, ready for submission to potential publishing houses.  She works with clients to put the finishing touches on their manuscripts so they are ready to sell.  Holly also does writer’s workshops and plenty of public speaking at various writer’s meetings and conferences.  Her busy schedule includes a writer’s workshop in Mobile, Alabama April 3 – 5th and the Atlanta Writers Conference in May for which there is already a stand by list for aspiring and published writer’s who seek her expert advise.

Holly’s Ordination

You might question her vast knowledge of various religious paths as you read her latest book.  Holly is a Gnostic scholar as well as a Celtic Christian Priest.  She is a wealth of information on matters of the spirit with an insight into the human condition not held by many.  The Vessel Of Scion is available through Amazon.  You can also order this book through any of our local bookstores.  Read more about Holly and her other books here:  www.hollysullivanmcclure.com.  Holly is my dear friend and one of the most talented writers I know.  I think you’ll love her books!

Wearing The Green

st. patricks day card lg

It’s St. Patrick’s Day!  My heritage is Scots-Irish so I feel like celebrating today!

Irish Lamb Stew lg.

I’ll be wearing the brightest green top I own and making a bit of Irish Stew, with lamb stew meat if I can find it!  I’ll stop at the Guinness, however, not my favorite brew….I might try Harp’s instead!  Irish Soda Bread, Cabbage with bacon…these are the traditional foods being served across the great pond in the Motherland.

But the story of St. Patrick is a wee bit different from what you might have heard.  He was known to have brought the Christian faith to Ireland in the fourth century.

shamrock

He used the three leaf clover to explain the Trinity to his followers.  The color originally given to represent this saint was blue, but his use of the clover quickly turned that to a rich shade of green.

Green is a color that also means Spring.  You’ll see it bursting out in the fashion world this year from clothing to accessories.

I draw the line at green beer…..I prefer to eat fresh greens rather than drink beer that is tinted to the color of the day!

Where ever you are and what ever your heritage this is a day of fun celebration so…….Erin Go Bragh!

Simple Sundays

On this Sunday, the day before the wearing of the green, I’m sharing a lovely piece by Secret Garden entitled “Hymn To Hope”.  We decided that we’ll celebrate the birthday of our precious rescue Wheaton Terrier, Murphy, on the 17th since he’s an Irish dog with an Irish name and we have no idea when his actual birthday is.  I like to begin each Sunday thinking of everything I’m thankful for and Murphy is definitely on my list of blessings.  He is one of the greatest gifts we’ve ever received.  So as you start the beginning of a new week say thank you for everything that brings you joy and take a moment just to be silent and soak it all in.  Life is a wonderful journey and each day a new beginning.   Have a blessed Sunday and don’t forget to wear your green tomorrow!

On The Radio

I talked with Lynn Nazzaro and Beth Smith, co-chairs of the annual Christ Church Tour of Homes, we had such fun!  These two ladies are lively, creative and totally invested in making this year’s tour the best one yet!  Listen in on our conversation and remember it’s not too late to get a ticket at Christ Church if you’re hearing this early in the morning.  I’ll be on the tour…see you there!

Finally Friday

I’m reposting this menu from last Spring when I was first blogging full time!  I’m busy working on new menus for the Spring and Summer that will begin next week.  In the meantime I hope you’ll enjoy this if you’re reading for the second time and if it’s the first time…..Bon Apetit!

I’m sharing a menu today that I have prepared for guests many times.  When I lived in New York City I did a lot of entertaining.  This menu was always my “go to” choice if I wanted something simple and elegant.  I have changed it over the years, adding blood oranges instead of canned mandarin’s, and a few other tweeks to make it healthier and even more delicious than ever.  Being based on the French method of cooking, the recipes naturally do use butter.    I hope you’ll love this as much as my family and guests have. It’s the perfect Spring meal accompanied by a glass of chilled champagne to begin and crisp, cold Viognier to go with the main course!

Pink Rice with Almonds

Sugar Snap Peas and Carrots with Fresh Dill Dip

I love to use rainbow carrots when I can find them.  Uncle Don’s Local Market has them on St. Simons Island.

1/2 pound fresh Sugar Snap Peas

1 bunch organic carrots

1 cup sour cream

8 ounces cream cheese

1 tablespoon mayonnaise

3 scallions, cleaned and finely diced, including the green ends

2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped

sea salt and white pepper to taste

Wash and dry the veggies.  In a large bowl combine the sour cream, cream cheese and mayonnaise, whip until well blended and smooth.  Fold in the remaining ingredients.  Serve in a glass bowl and surround with the cold snap peas and carrots.

001

Chicken in White Wine with Blood Oranges and Red Seedless Grapes

4 – 6 boneless skinless chicken breasts

6 tablespoons flour

salt to taste

3 tablespoons butter

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

3/4 cup dry white wine, good quality

Juice of one fresh blood orange (regular oranges will do if blood oranges are not available)

1 tablespoon orange blossom honey

1 cup chicken broth

1 cup thinly sliced shitake mushrooms

2 tablespoons melted butter

1/2 cup heavy cream

Thin slices of blood oranges and seedless red grapes for garnish.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Lightly dust the chicken with the flour and salt.  Melt the butter and oil in a large saute pan that will hold all of the chicken.  Brown the chicken well on all side.  Place the chicken in a baking dish and bake uncovered for 20 minutes.  Pour the fat from the saute pan, return to the stove top and add the white wine, blood orange juice and chicken broth.  Bring to a simmer, add the baked chicken and cook uncovered for 20 minutes, or until the chicken is tender.  I always like to “bathe” the chicken with the sauce as it simmers by spooning the liquid over the breasts every few minutes.  Lightly saute the mushrooms in the melted butter.  Add the mushrooms and cream to the chicken, mix and heat briefly.  Place each chicken breast on a plate with a mound of pink rice (see recipe below).

Pink Rice with Almonds

1 1/2 cups brown rice

1 cup water

1 cup chicken broth

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper

2 tablespoons butter

1/2 cup sliced, toasted almonds

1 tablespoon ground paprika

Place the brown rice, water and broth in a pot and bring to a boil.  Cover and let simmer until all of the liquid is absorbed, about 30 minutes.  Mix the remaining ingredients into the cooked rice.  I use a large, professional ice cream scoop to place a serving on each plate.  Sprinkle with chopped parsley.

Lightly Sauteed Asparagus Tips

1 pound fresh asparagus, washed and snapped about three – four inches from the end of the spear

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon butter

sea salt and pepper to taste

In a saute pan, melt the butter into the olive oil.  Add the asparagus and saute for about five minutes over medium heat.  Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Salad of Mixed Greens with Goat Cheese Cakes

I like to serve this after the entree as would be done in France.

2 endive

1 radicchio head

1 butter lettuce head

1 log of goat cheese, about six inches, cut into 1/2 inch slices

1 cup panko crumbs

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

French vinaigrette dressing

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon champagne vinegar

1/2 teaspoon ground mustard

salt and pepper to taste

Wash the greens well and hand tear them, placing them in a chilled salad bowl.  Take the slices of goat cheese and gently press them to about 1/4 inch each.  Spread the panko crumbs on a paper towel and press the cheese into the crumbs to coat them on both sides.  Lightly brown in a saute pan with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.

French vinaigrette dressing:

Whisk all ingredients together and pour over the salad greens, tossing well.

White Chocolate Mousse with Raspberries

I know just hearing the word mousse sends cold shivers up the spine of anyone who has not made a mousse.  Do NOT be afraid!  They are really, really easy to make!  Be sure you have a nice set of glass !  This is so delicious and easy…..you’ll love it!  (Thanks to Epicurious.com for this foolproof recipe!)

  • 8 ounces good-quality white chocolate (such as Lindt or Baker’s), finely chopped
  • 1 2/3 cups chilled whipping cream
  • 2 small flats of fresh raspberries, washed well and patted dry
  • 1 bunch fresh mint, washed
  • Stir white chocolate and 2/3 cup cream in heavy medium saucepan over low heat until chocolate is melted. Transfer chocolate mixture to large bowl. Let stand until mixture is cool and just beginning to thicken, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes. Beat remaining 1 cup cream in medium bowl until stiff peaks form. Fold into cool chocolate mixture in 2 additions. Cover; chill mousse at least 2 hours. (Can be made 1 day ahead. Keep chilled.  NOTE:  I spoon the mousse into individual serving pieces and chill.
  • Garnish with fresh raspberries and a sprig of fresh mint.

Nearly Spring

029

I want to capture the essence of the first days of spring here on the island.  I know, it doesn’t officially begin until March 20th, but we live on a semi-tropical island so there is a bit of a “jump start” to the season for us.  I’m visiting different places in the area today to show you the beautiful flowers that are beginning to bloom.

014

Azaleas in all their different colors and varieties abound.  They form hedges that grace the lawns of homes on the island.  My favorite are the white azaleas.  The fragile blooms appear like lace on the ends of branches.  They don’t last for long, but their beauty is breathtaking while they are here with us.

023

Down the street from our home grows the most glorious Bradford pear tree.  It doesn’t bear fruit, but bursts with beautiful white blossoms this time of year.  It canopies over the street, gently dropping tiny petals that gather on the pavement like snowflakes.

bradfordpear

The marshes are beginning to regain their color as well.  The dull brown they wear in colder months is turning to  rich golds and shades of green as the warmer March winds begin to blow.

027

I have long been a lover of Emily Dickinson and her poetry.   I especially love this one, entitled “A Light Exists In Spring”.  It seems appropriate for season!

A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period —
When March is scarcely here

A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.

It waits upon the lawn;
It shows the furthest tree
Upon the furthest slope we know;
It almost speaks to me.

Then, as horizons step,
Or noons report away,
Without the formula of sound,
It passes, and we stay:

A quality of loss
Affecting our content,
As trade had suddenly encroached
Upon a sacrament.

Emily Dickinson

030

Maybe it’s because March is the month of my birth, but spring is, without doubt, my favorite time of year.  Of course, I feel the same way when Autumn arrives.  It’s difficult not to love all of the different seasons here on our island.    What a glorious place to call home!

A New York Fashion Event!

We live on this wonderful island, the same size of Manhattan.  It’s hard to imagine this when you picture New York City, its skyscrapers and pulsing energy.  On Thursday evening, March 13th you’ll be in for a treat when you attend the Sea Island Fashion Event at The Cloister on Sea Island.

zang_toi

Zang Toi is coming to Sea Island Fashion Week  with 32 different looks carefully selected from his 2014 Spring and Fall Fashion Collections.  Fashion Avenue News says, “Zang Toi is fashion!”  What began during a chance meeting with Steve Moore, President of Evelyne Talman and Cloister Collection, during a flight layover in Paris ended in a lasting friendship that will now give all attending the show an unforgettable experience.

This talented, vibrant designer infuses all of his creations with that energy to the delight of his faithful clientele.  His fashions have been featured in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Time and Newsweek.  The famous editor of Vogue Magazine, Anna Wintour championed Zang’s work in 1990 sending him soaring into the fashion world like a sky rocket.  His recent show during New York’s famed fashion week, entitled “Black and Blue Ballet” was hailed a masterpiece by fashion lovers worldwide.

The event supports the Coastal Symphony and the beautiful programs it presents to music lovers in the Golden Isles.   Dotty Anne Smith at Evelyne Talman contacted Symphony president, Alice Barlow, about hosting a show to benefit the Symphony.  Barlow then connected with Susan Imhoff, chair of The Symphony Society.   They contacted Sea Island about holding this fabulous event at The Cloister and the planning began.  Other members of the Society, Sharon Flores, Sibby Gruber and Susie Salvatore joined in to plan an evening you will simply love!
